Horde Defenders Early-Game Tower Path
Scrap-first priorities before heavy Gem spending in the Oct 2026 alpha.
The early game in Horde Defenders is where most leaks happen—not because the swarm is unfair, but because players buy flashy guns before they buy time. This Early-Game Tier List is an editorial budget path for the October 2026 alpha. It assumes you are pushing campaign worlds, redeeming Codes for Scrap, Gems, and Boosters, and still learning How to Aim. Full late-game opinions live on the Tower Tier List Hub; heroes are covered on the Heroes Tier List.
Remember the core rules: towers fire where you aim, and high ground adds range and damage. A cheap Sentry on a ridge often beats an expensive gun on flat ground you cannot track. Soft-reported towers (Inferno, Hive, Nest, Burst Cannon) are not part of this starter path—ignore them until confirmed and affordable.
Priority ladder (before heavy Gems)
- Sentry — open every run with honest DPS you can afford to mis-aim once.
- Barricade — buy stall so columns form.
- Howitzer — spend into column delete once stalls exist.
- Barbed Wire / Tar Lobber — thicken the kill box.
- Railgun — unlock when armor or priority targets punish spray.
- Dreadnought / Stormcaller — later flex; skins from SORRY are cosmetic, not a reason to skip steps 1–5.
Step 1 — Sentry as your training wheels
Sentry is the starter DPS for a reason. It teaches fire cadence, leading moving packs, and the difference between aiming at the nose of the horde versus the dense middle. Place Sentries on high ground covering the main approach. Do not spam ten flat Sentries if two elevated ones cover the same cone—read High Ground.
Scrap rule: first income after the tutorial should stabilize a small Sentry line you can actually aim, not a mixed zoo of one-of-each towers. Use Boosters from codes when you want faster practice loops, not as a substitute for placement discipline. Pair with Getting Started if you are brand new to the UI.
Step 2 — Barricade before greed
The moment bugs start leaking past your aim, you do not need more DPS first—you need stall. Barricade creates the packed column that makes Howitzer shells matter. Put Barricades at natural funnels, then keep Barbed Wire or slow tools in front when you can afford them.
Players who skip Barricade and jump straight to heavy guns often “feel underpowered” because every shot hits a thin stream instead of a clump. In a manual-aim game, clump size is DPS.
Hero tip: park Warden near the Barricade line on AI while you aim guns. Possess only when the line is about to break. See the Heroes Guide.
Step 3 — Howitzer as your first real power spike
Once stalls exist, Howitzer is the early-to-mid power spike. Aim into the packed lane, preferably from elevation. One well-aimed Howitzer outperforms three panicked Sentries firing at empty ground beside the pack. This is the fantasy the game sells—earn it with Barricades first.
Practice drill: play a familiar early map, force yourself to wait until bugs stack on the Barricade, then fire. If you shoot the moment the first bug appears, you are training the wrong reflex.
Step 4 — Barbed Wire and Tar Lobber as glue
Barbed Wire adds a damage/slow belt on the path. Tar Lobber slows and softens areas so Howitzer and Sentry fire stays efficient. These are A-tier support tools on the main list and excellent early-mid buys once Sentry + Barricade + Howitzer are online. They are not replacements for the core path; they are multipliers.
When to unlock Railgun
Unlock Railgun when you notice spray damage bouncing off tougher bugs, boss phases, or priority enemies that demand a deliberate shot. Railgun is not a day-one Gem dump for most accounts. If your leaks are caused by volume—not armor—buy another Howitzer angle or a better Barricade setup first.
Signals you are ready for Railgun:
- Early worlds feel stable with Sentry/Howitzer/Barricade.
- A specific armored or elite type survives your AoE.
- You can spare attention to aim a priority gun without dropping your Howitzer tracking—How to Aim.
Signals you are unlocking too early:
- You still leak to basic swarms.
- You cannot afford Barricades on new maps.
- You own Railgun but keep aiming it at trash packs Howitzer should handle.
What not to buy first
- Dreadnought / Stormcaller as openers — heavy and flex; fine later. SORRY skins do not change the economy order; check Codes.
- Soft-reported Inferno / Hive / Nest / Burst Cannon — experimental until confirmed; do not plan a starter build around them.
- Random one-ofs — a coherent Sentry → Barricade → Howitzer triangle beats a museum of single towers you cannot aim together.
Gem and Booster hygiene
Spend early Gems on progress that shortens the path above (permanent unlocks you will use every run), not cosmetics. Use Boosters when you have a clear practice goal: one session of high-ground Howitzer drills, or a push into the next campaign world. Track patch changes on Updates because alpha refunds or tech-tree tweaks can change optimal spend—Alpha Status notes refund expectations when Horizon adjusts trees.
Sample early loadout mindset
- Guns: 2–3 high-ground Sentries, 1 Howitzer covering the main stack point.
- Stalls: Barricade at the funnel; Barbed Wire on the carpet in front.
- Flex: Tar Lobber when scrap allows; Railgun only after armor appears.
- Hero: Warden on AI at the line; Marksman possess for later priority checks (Heroes Tier List).
Bridging to mid game and Endless
When campaign maps open multiple approaches, duplicate the pattern per lane instead of stacking every Scrap into one oversized gun. For Endless, keep stalls refreshed and expect to possess heroes more—Endless Mode. Revisit the main Tier List Hub once Scrap is no longer your bottleneck.

Master the budget path first. Alpha metas shift; the order “aim practice → stall → column delete → priority gun” stays useful even when letter grades move.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Horde Defenders questions.
What should I buy first with Scrap?
Stabilize Sentries on high ground, then Barricades to create clumps, then Howitzer to delete those clumps. Unlock Railgun when armor demands it.
Why is Barricade ahead of fancy DPS?
Manual aim needs packed targets. Barricade stalls the horde so Howitzer and slows hit dense columns instead of thin streams.
When is Railgun worth unlocking?
When tougher or armored enemies survive your AoE and you can spare aim attention for priority shots without dropping your main column fire.
Should I use Gems on Dreadnought early?
Usually no. Finish the Sentry–Barricade–Howitzer core first. Dreadnought and Stormcaller are later flex options; SORRY skins are cosmetic.
Are Inferno or Burst Cannon good starters?
They are soft-reported only on this wiki. Do not plan your early-game path around them until they are consistently confirmed.
Which hero fits this early path?
Warden on AI near Barricades. Possess for emergencies; switch toward Marksman later for priority targets once your gun line is stable.
