Horde Defenders Heroes Tier List
Warden, Marksman, and Sentinel ranked for the Oct 2026 alpha—opinion only.
This page ranks the three Horde Defenders heroes—Warden, Marksman, and Sentinel—for the October 2026 alpha. Like the Tower Tier List, this is an editorial opinion. Horizon Studios can rebalance kits, AI behavior, or possess controls at any time. Pair this list with the deep guides on the Heroes Hub, the overview Heroes Guide, and mode tips in Endless Mode.
Heroes are not towers. You can let them fight on their own or possess them and play directly. That dual mode is the real ranking axis: some heroes forgive AFK AI on early maps; others punish you unless you take the stick during boss spikes or multi-lane Endless waves. Manual-aim towers still do most of the clearing—heroes plug gaps, hold chokes, and give you a body when guns are reloading or misaimed.
Ranking criteria
We weight: (1) reliability when left on AI during normal campaign levels, (2) impact when possessed during bosses and Challenges, (3) synergy with high-ground gun lines and Barricade stalls, (4) learning curve for new players coming from Getting Started, (5) value in Endless where fatigue and lane splits matter. There is no hidden fourth hero in the live storefront trio; soft-reported towers do not create soft-reported heroes here.
S tier — default recommend
Warden (frontline / tanky presence)
Best for: campaign learning curve, choke holds, players who want a durable body near Barricades and Barbed Wire.
Warden sits at the top for most accounts in alpha because frontline presence buys time for your aim. When bugs pile into a funnel, a tanky hero at the lip keeps the column honest while Howitzers and Tar Lobbers work. On AI, Warden tends to stay useful without constant babysitting on early-to-mid worlds. When possessed, you can body-block lanes, soak attention, and retreat behind stalls if health dips.
Use when: you are still building Scrap income, your gun line is Sentry-heavy, or a Challenge punishes leaks at the outpost. Possess when: a boss or dense spike threatens to break the Barricade line. Leave on AI when: you need full attention on Railgun priority shots and Howitzer columns—see How to Aim.

A tier — specialty carries
Marksman (ranged precision)
Best for: high-ground maps, armor priority, players with steady aim who already understand tower firing arcs.
Marksman rewards the same skills the game teaches with towers: pick the right target, lead the pack, and stay elevated when you can. Possessed Marksman is excellent for deleting priority bugs that would otherwise force a panic Railgun swing. On pure AI, Marksman is still solid but can waste effort on low-value targets if the lane is chaotic—your job is to possess during the moments that matter.
Use when: armor shows up, bosses need focused damage, or Endless lanes are long enough that a ranged hero covers approaches your guns cannot all watch. Possess when: a single high-threat unit enters the kill box. Leave on AI when: you are managing multi-tower aim and only need background DPS.
Full kit notes: Marksman guide.
Sentinel (hybrid / guard)
Best for: flexible defense, Challenges with awkward modifiers, players who swap between holding a point and assisting guns.
Sentinel’s hybrid guard fantasy fits maps where you cannot commit fully to a pure tank or pure sniper. It is slightly less “set and forget” than Warden for brand-new players, and slightly less delete-button than a hot Marksman possess, which is why it sits beside Marksman in A rather than automatic S. In the right hands—especially after you learn High Ground placements—Sentinel ties a defense together.
Use when: you need a guard near a secondary lane or Workshop layouts with multiple approaches. Possess when: a flank starts leaking and your Barricades are elsewhere. Leave on AI when: the main choke is stable and you are focusing tower aim.

Practical tier summary
| Rank | Hero | Short take |
|---|---|---|
| S | Warden | Safest default; buys time for guns |
| A | Marksman | Best precision possess; shines with armor |
| A | Sentinel | Flexible guard; strong once you multi-task |
If you only unlock playstyle comfort with one hero first, start Warden, clear early campaign, then practice Marksman possess on maps with clear sightlines. Add Sentinel when Challenges ask for adaptable holding patterns.
Synergy with tower tiers
Heroes do not replace Howitzer or Railgun value—they protect the windows those guns need. Pair Warden with Barricade and Barbed Wire. Pair Marksman with Railgun priority habits and high ground. Pair Sentinel with Tar Lobber slow zones so the hybrid kit fights in thickened packs. Budget order for towers remains on the Early-Game Tier List.
Mode-specific notes
Campaign: Warden first through early worlds; swap possess to Marksman for boss checks when comfortable.
Challenges: Read the modifier. Leak-heavy rules favor Warden/Sentinel. Priority-target rules favor Marksman.
Endless: Expect to possess more often as lanes multiply. Rotate hero choice if fatigue makes one kit feel sticky—see Endless Mode.
Workshop: Build sightlines for Marksman and chokes for Warden if you want to showcase hero skill ceilings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Horde Defenders questions.
Which hero should beginners pick first?
Warden. The tanky frontline presence forgives early aim mistakes and pairs naturally with Barricades while you learn manual tower aim.
Should I always possess my hero?
No. Leave them on AI while you aim towers, then possess for bosses, leaks, or priority targets. Splitting attention badly is worse than decent AI.
Is Marksman better than Warden?
Not as a universal default. Marksman is better for precision and armor focus when you can possess well; Warden is safer for most campaign progress.
Where does Sentinel fit in the meta?
A tier as a hybrid guard. Excellent for awkward Challenges and secondary lanes once you can multitask between possess and tower aim.
Do heroes replace towers?
No. Towers clear the horde; heroes buy time, delete priority threats, and cover mistakes. Invest Scrap in guns and stalls first.
Will this hero tier list change?
Yes. It is an Oct 2026 alpha editorial ranking. Check Updates and Alpha Status after patches from Horizon Studios.
