Horde Defenders Strikes and Abilities
When to fire drone strikes, meteors, ripsaws, salvos, and stasis so your aimed towers finish the job.
The Horde Defenders storefront promises drone strikes, meteors, ripsaws, salvos, and stasis fields alongside manual-aim towers. Those abilities are emergency buttons and tempo tools — not a replacement for Sentries on high ground. This guide explains when each strike type earns its cooldown so you stop panic-firing into empty lanes.
Read High Ground and How to Aim first. Abilities shine when Barricades and Barbed Wire already stack bugs into a pocket your reticle can see.
What strikes are for
Towers delete steady columns. Strikes delete mistakes and spikes:
- A Barricade about to break
- An elite pack that entered while you were possessing a hero
- A boss add wave that overflows the wire
- A Workshop layout with no clean elevation
If you burn a meteor the moment it comes off cooldown, you will have nothing left when the real leak starts. Treat abilities like Scrap buffers — spend them when the alternative is restarting the level.
Strike roster (official naming)
Drone strikes
Fast reaction tools for a visible clump. Best when you can see the Barricade pocket filling and need immediate DPS without leaving your aim cone for long. Call drones onto the densest part of the path your Sentry already covers.
Meteors
Heavy area punishment. Lead slightly if packs are still moving; meteors love Wire-slowed sponges. Avoid casting onto empty desert “just in case.”
Ripsaws
Think of ripsaws as path-cutting pressure — strong when bugs are forced through a narrow gate you built. Pair with Barricades so the saw spends time on bodies instead of air.
Salvos
Burst volleys for armored spikes or boss windows. Save salvos for the moment Railgun alone cannot keep up, then return to manual tracking.
Stasis fields
The aim multiplier. Freeze a column on Wire or Tar, then empty elevated DPS into a motionless sponge. Stasis is often higher value than raw damage when your Howitzer needs a stationary lob target.
Exact UI labels and unlock order can shift in alpha — verify cooldowns in your build and cross-check Alpha Status.
Combo patterns that work
- Stall → Stasis → Howitzer/Railgun — freeze the gate, delete the stack, resume tracking.
- Wire fill → Meteor/Drone — wait until the pocket is visibly dense.
- Hero possess return → Salvo — if possession left a lane soft, salvo the overflow then re-center aim.
- Boss telegraphs → Ripsaw/Salvo — spend big cooldowns on scripted spikes, not trash waves.
Hero kits from Warden, Marksman, and Sentinel should support the same chokepoint. Abilities are team-wide panic tools even on solo servers.
Economy and cooldowns
Boosters from Codes do not replace strike discipline — they just give you more attempts per hour. Spend Scrap on the funnel first (Economy Guide, Towers Guide). A perfect meteor cannot save a flat Sentry forest.
During Endless Mode, rotate abilities so you are never fully dry before a known density spike. In campaign bosses across the five worlds (Campaign Guide), hold one major strike for the phase that historically leaks.
Common mistakes
- Casting on spawn instead of on the chokepoint
- Using stasis with no DPS looking at the freeze
- Double-casting two nukes into the same small pack
- Ignoring strikes entirely until the Barricade is already gone
- Blaming abilities when the real issue is missing high ground
Practice drills
- Clear an early map without strikes to learn the funnel.
- Replay it and allow one meteor only when Wire is full.
- Practice a stasis → Howitzer delete on a mid map.
- In Endless, note which wave number usually forces your first drone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Horde Defenders questions.
What strike abilities exist in Horde Defenders?
The official description highlights drone strikes, meteors, ripsaws, salvos, and stasis fields. Cooldown details can change in alpha.
Should I use abilities as soon as they are ready?
No. Save them for stacked Barricade pockets, elites, or boss spikes. Early trash waves are for practicing aim.
Which ability helps aim the most?
Stasis fields. Freezing a column on Wire or Tar gives Howitzer and Railgun a stationary target.
Do strikes replace high ground?
Never. Elevation and stalls create the stacks strikes delete. Flat spam wastes both Scrap and cooldowns.
How do heroes interact with strikes?
Possess when you need precise hero kits, but return to tower aim quickly. Use a salvo or drone if the lane softened while you were away.
Where are strike keybinds listed?
See the Controls page under Tools. Alpha UI can move bindings — recheck after patches.
