Horde Defenders Controls
PC and mobile reference for aim, placement, upgrades, strikes, and hero possession — verify in your alpha build.
Horde Defenders is a manual-aim tower defense: towers fire where you point, not where an AI soft-locks. Learning controls is therefore part of learning the game. This page documents the control families you will use on PC and mobile — aim, place, upgrade, strikes, and hero possess — with the explicit caveat that Horizon Studios’ alpha UI can rename or move buttons between patches.
Treat in-game prompts as the source of truth if this page and your HUD disagree. After any patch, skim Updates and re-test on a low map before a serious Endless run.
Control philosophy
Everything funnels into one idea: keep the reticle useful. Placement and upgrades only matter if you can return to aim quickly. Hero possession and strikes are powerful only if you can exit them without losing the column. Read How to Aim alongside this page.
Aim
What aiming does
- Directs fire for the currently controlled tower perspective.
- Does not auto-snap to the nearest bug.
- Benefits from high-ground pads that grant extra range and damage — see High Ground.
PC aim
- Move the mouse to track columns laterally.
- Prefer smooth motion over frantic flicks across distant lanes.
- Keep the cursor near the Barricade or wire pocket you built.
- After opening menus, consciously re-center on the densest pack.
Mobile aim
- Use broader finger strokes; tiny jitters are harder to read on touch.
- Avoid covering the lane with your hand or thumb.
- If the HUD eats screen space, lower non-essential panels when the alpha client allows.
- Recalibrate after rotating the device or switching aspect ratios.
Aim practice binding drill
- Enter an easy cleared map.
- Place one elevated Sentry and one Barricade.
- Spend three waves only tracking — no menu tourism.
- Add Howitzer and practice lead shots into the pocket.
- Only then test upgrade and strike keys under light pressure.
Place towers
Placement mode lets you put Sentry, Railgun, Howitzer, Barricade, Barbed Wire, Tar Lobber, Dreadnought, Stormcaller, and the rest of the 18-tower roster (including community-reported Inferno, Hive, Nest, and Burst Cannon when unlocked).
Placement habits
- Enter place mode only when you know the pad.
- Prefer elevated pads that see the chokepoint.
- Confirm the ghost range overlaps your funnel before committing Scrap.
- Exit place mode immediately and resume aim.
- Never wander in place mode during a dense wave unless the lane is already stable.
New players: follow the first-session plan on Getting Started so you are not unlocking random towers before you can place a funnel.
Upgrade
Upgrades amplify the cone you already aim. Controls vary by device, but the workflow is stable:
- Select the tower that covers the live lane.
- Apply the upgrade that fixes the current failure (range, damage, or defensive HP).
- Close the upgrade UI.
- Re-acquire the column within one second.
If upgrading takes longer than a breath, you are upgrading at the wrong time — wait for a lull or use a stasis strike first (Heroes Guide covers strike timing).
Strikes
Strikes are separate from basic tower fire. Known tools include:
- Drone strikes
- Meteors
- Ripsaws
- Salvos
- Stasis fields
Strike control rules
- Bind or remember the strike entry so you can open it without losing visual contact with the lane.
- Target stacked bugs on Barricade, wire, or Tar — not empty terrain.
- After confirmation, force aim re-acquire before celebrating.
- Keep one emergency strike unspent during Endless spikes (Endless Mode).
Exact button labels may read differently in your build; learn the icon shapes, not only the text.
Heroes — AI and possess
Heroes (Warden, Marksman, Sentinel) support the same manual-aim fantasy.
AI mode
- Default when you need full attention on tower tracking.
- Glance occasionally to ensure the hero is not idling off-lane.
Possess mode
- Park tower aim on the funnel mouth.
- Enter possess using the on-screen hero control.
- Use abilities for the breach or boss window.
- Exit possess as soon as the crisis ends.
- Confirm tower reticle is still on a live pack.
If possess controls feel awkward on mobile, shorten possess windows until muscle memory exists. Full strategy sits on Heroes Guide and the heroes tier list.
Codes and menu HUD
The Codes button typically appears near the upper area after the tutorial unlocks it. That is a menu control, not a combat control, but it is part of your session startup. Steps: How to Redeem, list: Codes.
Other meta menus (shop, inventory, cosmetics) should stay closed during waves. Every extra panel is a chance to forget the column.
PC versus mobile summary
| Action | PC focus | Mobile focus |
|---|---|---|
| Aim | Fine mouse tracking | Broad touch strokes, clear finger path |
| Place | Quick pad click, fast exit | Confirm ghost pad carefully, then exit |
| Upgrade | Hotkey or quick select if available | Large tap targets; upgrade in lulls |
| Strikes | Fast icon + reticle confirm | Two-step care to avoid mis-taps |
| Possess | Short, deliberate windows | Even shorter until comfortable |
Alpha UI disclaimer (read this)
Horde Defenders is in alpha. The following may change without a full redesign of this article:
- Exact key names and button captions
- Codes button position
- Strike menu nesting
- Hero possess entry points
- Mobile gesture conflicts with Roblox system gestures
When something moves, update your personal notes, re-run the aim practice drill, and continue. Strategy pages (Guides Hub, Tier List Hub, Players Hub) remain valid even when a label renames.
Session startup controls checklist
- Device confirmed (PC or mobile)
- Aim feel tested for ten seconds in an empty or easy wave
- Place mode enter/exit practiced once
- Upgrade open/close practiced once
- Strike menu located visually
- Hero AI/possess toggle located
- Codes redeemed if new rewards dropped
- Strategy reminder: one funnel, high ground, track the column

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Horde Defenders questions.
Do Horde Defenders towers aim automatically?
No. Every shot follows your reticle or touch aim. Learning aim controls is mandatory, not optional quality-of-life.
Are PC and mobile controls identical?
The actions match — aim, place, upgrade, strikes, possess — but HUD layout and input feel differ. Warm up after switching devices.
What should I do if a button moved after a patch?
Trust the in-game HUD, re-locate strikes and possess on a low map, and skim Updates. Alpha UI changes are expected.
How do I avoid dying while upgrading?
Upgrade during lulls or after a stasis, change only the tower on the live cone, then re-acquire aim within a second.
Where is the Codes button?
Usually near the upper HUD after the tutorial unlocks it. Exact placement can shift in alpha — see How to Redeem for the step list.
Should I possess heroes on mobile?
Yes, but keep windows short until possess entry and exit feel reliable. Park tower aim on the funnel before possessing.
